Our Approach
At Learning4Leaders, we understand the utmost importance of prioritising the safety of your workforce, especially in the manufacturing industry where daily activities pose significant risks. Managing these risks to an acceptable level can be challenging. Our approach centres on providing comprehensive guidelines, programs, and procedures to ensure the utmost protection of your staff.
Creating a safe working environment not only ensures compliance with legislation but also demonstrates genuine care for your staff, leading to increased engagement and morale, providing a significant competitive advantage. Promoting a safety-first culture involves holding everyone accountable to the correct standards. Our experienced interim HR managers have successfully guided numerous businesses on this journey, resulting in fewer accidents, improved attitudes, and financial savings, all achieved by operating in the right way.
Call to action
Following a visit from a HSE Inspector after a reportable accident at a manufacturing company, Learning4Leaders was called in to address the situation.
Implementation
Learning4Leaders took the following actions:
- Conducted an analysis of the safety culture within the company.
- Carried out a comprehensive factory-wide safety inspection to identify high, medium, and low-priority safety concerns for the improvement plan.
- Secured commitment from the Directors for a dedicated safety budget.
- Established a robust safety strategy with clearly defined responsibilities and individual accountabilities, including KPIs.
- Implemented a statutory compliance inspection regime (LOLER, PSSR, PUWER, etc.)
- Introduced a ‘Control of Contractors Procedure,’ including a permit-to-work system.
Furthermore, Learning4Leaders provided training to all staff, from Directors to Operators, covering:
- Employer and employee responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAW)
- Writing risk assessments
- Near-miss reporting
- Thorough investigation of accidents and advice on implementing corrective actions
- Machine/job task training
- A safety committee was introduced, conducting regular meetings to discuss safety concerns and set expected standards for all areas of the factory. An audit program was established to maintain these standards.
Result
Thanks to the tools, techniques, and training provided by Learning4Leaders, all staff members are now fully engaged in reducing both accidents and ‘lost time’ incidents. Management was highly impressed with the thoroughness and meticulous approach of the audit, as well as the subsequent actions introduced. The staff, despite initial reservations, are now committed to improving health and safety performance, recognising the benefits to themselves, their job security, personal safety, and their clients/consumers.
